A. D Harvey Elementary Students Win Texas Lone Star Math Cup State Championship

"The students won this competition," said Ms. Perez "They worked very, very hard, passed lessons, solved math problems, and we made for the best class in Texas!"

Mrs. Yolanda Herrera's 2nd Period TTM Class (room F1) took the top spot for Region 2 earning a total score of 253.5 points.

"My class came from the bottom and managed to come up to take first place," said Mrs. Herrera. "We are very happy!"

Harvey students put in a lot of extra hours in and out of school to achieve their goals. Students answered questions and solved math problems to earned points. The accumulation of these points placed participating classes in various rankings.

"Our students and teachers have made every moment count," said Mrs. D. Mireles, A. D. Harvey Elementary School Principal. "Every time a student finished their work, or after school, or in extended day lab time, they worked on their Think Through Math goal; one problem at a time. That's how we got a State championship and the top five Regional spots."

Think Through Math is a web-based program designed to support, guide and advance students in Mathematics. The program emphasizes concepts and skills that target critical foundations for Algebra, and most importantly, student success in Mathematics.

"Think Through Math is a state initiative," said Mrs. Mireles. "We have made it part of the curriculum here at Harvey Elementary, and it has proved to be very effective with our students."

In addition, a total of five Harvey Elementary Classes ranked in the top five spots out of 10 regional winners. Regional Winners: First Place: Mrs. Yolanda Herrera’s Second Period TTM Class with 253.5 points; Second Place: Mrs. Isabel DeLeon’s Second Period TTM Class with 223.5 points; Third Place: Ms. Liana Garza’s Second Period TTM Class with 61.94 points; Fourth Place: Mrs. Jennifer Sphon’s Second Period TTM Class with 48.88 points; Fifth Place: Mrs. Stephanie Scott’s Second Period TTM Class with 48.65 points.

"This is a great accomplishment," said Dr. Carol Perez, Kingsville ISD Superintendent. "Our students worked very hard to achieve their goal and we're extremely proud of them. And it couldn't be done without their teachers. They continued to encourage their students to keep working hard, and it paid off."
