Health

Harvey Elementary coordinated health school program involves a variety to resources. Students in grades K thru 2nd focus on health education and acquire skills necessary to be healthy individuals and understand risk behaviors. Areas of focus include safety, body systems, drug and dental awareness, personal hygiene, communicable diseases, nutrition, and self-esteem and character education. Other health related areas are also covered. Discovery education and other internet websites are used to teach the content. Students in 3rd and 4th grade are using the Macmillan/McGraw-Hill Health and Wellness Texas edition health textbooks. Areas of study include mental and emotional health, family and social health, growth and development, nutrition, personal health and physical activity, violence and injury prevention, alcohol and other drugs, communicable and chronic diseases, consumer and community health, and environmental health. Discovery Education and other resources are also implemented to teach health education. Also some physical education activities incorporate health related information.

Physical Education

The physical education program focuses on strength, endurance and flexibility. Students will acquire the knowledge and skills related to movement. The focus is also aimed at understanding the importance of a physically-active lifestyle. Areas of focus include body awareness, self-management/social skills/general movement, directionality, form and execution of skill, applied movement, and lead-up games and team sports. Harvey Elementary physical education program utilizes a vast number of resources. The CATCH program, physical education activity books, internet websites, curriculum guides, and other literature are utilized. All activities and games coincide with Texas essential knowledge and skills (TEKS). The FITNESSGRAM is administered to all 3rd and 4th graders. The FITNESSGRAM is a program that is designed to promote physical activity to students. It is a test that measures health related physical fitness. Cardiovascular, muscle strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and composition are the areas the measured.
