Hello to all new students and parents!

 

We will begin this year in 6th grade science by learning about lab safety.  We will then move into our first unit which will be a study of the elements (metals, metaloids and non-metals) and the Periodic Table of the Elements (PT). Students will learn some of the chemical and physical properties of the elements and learn to identify the elements by their symbols on the PT.  They will also learn how to identify the atomic number and atomic weight of the elements, and they will learn the structure of the atom.

 

Gifted and Talented (GT) students should begin thinking about what they would like to do for the Science Fair.  We have had a student advance to the Texas State Science and Engineering Competition on each of the previous two years, and I would very much like to have another student go this year.  This requires a lot of hard work to attain, and every year it seems like the time goes faster.  Last-minute projects simply are not of the quality to qualify for the regional or state science fairs, and I want everyone to have a fair chance to win. Parents, please begin working with your child on ideas for the fair as soon as possible.  I will send out updates as the upcoming month progresses.

 

Once again, I am looking forward to a great year, and I hope all of you are as well.  Thank you in advance for helping us make it a really productive year!
